The International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) and the Center for Arab Women Training and Research (CAWTAR), in collaboration with the United Nations Information Center in Tunis (UNIC), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and United Nations Development Fund for Women, organises an awareness workshop targeting media professionals and female politicians around the theme “Women, Politics, Media and Communication.”
This session, opened by Mrs. Bebiya Bouhnak Chihi, Minister of Women Affairs, Family, Children and Elderly, was initiated in anticipation of the municipal elections that took place in May 2010. It was organised in the context of the project “Strengthening women’s leadership and participation of women in the political process and decision-making in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia,” and was held from March 30th to the 1st of April 2010, at Hotel Marco Polo in Hammamet.
A study performed under the framework of the same project, entitled “The mediatization of women’s political participation in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia” underlines the strategic role of media in the promotion of women’s political participation. This report, issued from a media exercise, allows one to see that although media treatment regarding women’s participation in politics is generally positive, the airtime reserved for women in audiovisual media is considerably lower than that of men.
Taking this data into consideration, the session involves both male and female journalists, different Tunisian media outlets (written press, audiovisual, electronic) as well as politically active women, all with the goal of introducing a gender-based approach to the media sector as far as political participation is concerned. The aim was, on the one hand; to promote a more egalitarian treatment of male and female politicians in the press, and on another; to improve the relationship between the latter and the media.
These axes, which constitute the priority intervention areas defined by the 2009-2014 Presidential Program and the 11th Development Plan, are managed on a institutional level as well as in the context of a multilateral partnership as illustrated by this activity.
