Women of the Arab Spring
The revolutionary wave of uprisings that has swept across the Middle East and North Africa has lead us to question the degree to which women were the driving force behind the protests and led us to question what changes will be made in the coming years as a result of the civil movement. The Arab Spring is really a story about the mobilization of the masses from all levels of socio-economic status, gender, age and culture, however the significant of this social movement will have ramifications for women within the region and beyond. Traditionally Arab leadership is a male affair, however the combined effects of the youthful optimism and social media have given prominence to women in the Arab Spring that they have not had in the past.
