Back in April we showcased a media review of news articles on women of the Arab Spring; over the last six months the revolutions have come to be seen as a turning point in the social and political history of humanity with women playing an increasingly important role. The 2011 Nobel Peace Prize award winners reflect this. One of the recipients, Tawakkul Karman, is a prominent activist in Yemen and was recognised for her role in leading a peaceful protest. Traditionally Arab leadership is a male affair, however the combined effects of the youthful optimism and social media have given prominence to women in the Arab Spring that they have not had in the past.
