Women and elections
Women have a critical role to play in elections to have their voice heard, both as voters and as elected representatives. Still, while more and more women vote, fewer are elected officials. This Special Focus looks at the role of women in elections, drawing on articles from various situations around the world; for example, the recent general election in Pakistan, where women voted in record numbers in many parts of the country despite restrictions imposed through family tradition, political party orders, and the threat of Taliban violence; or the case of Indonesia, where female candidates running for next year’s legislative election are now rushing to learn campaign strategies.
