The UN-INSTRAW & CAWTAR project organized, in partnership with the Spanish Foundation Peace and Solidarity Serafin-Aliaga -FPS- and International Trade Union Confederation, the first panel of the capacity building program for women leaders in trade union from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, that was held in Casablanca (Morocco) September 16th to 17th.

Main objective

The main objective of the capacity building programme is to change organizational culture and methods of operation of trade unions through gender mainstreaming. The first meeting was devoted to clarifying the framework and context of the initiative and to provide, in participatory way, a gender overview of the 3 unions. The 13 participants coming from three national trade unions (Democratic Labour Confederation (CDT Morocco), General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA Algeria) and the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT Tunisia) better assimilated the concept of gender, specially in the context of trade unions actions and shared information and experiences about unions’ women committees of each country involved. The session ended with a joint “road map” for gender mainstreaming in trade unions.

Next steps

The participants have also identified the themes for future meetings which will be held in Tunis (November) and Algiers (December):
1. Tunis: Diagnosis and gender planning
2. Launch and Activate a Network of Women Committees of Maghreb syndicates
